3dfx Voodoo2 - Extreme Active Cooling Mod

  • Here is the side project wich i mentioned in the "Recreate the rare TennMax Voodoo2 cooler" thred. This is my homemade Voodoo2 active cooling mod. The project was startet long time ago, but really made any progress until now. The project is not totally completed yet, the mounting system will be replaced by a 3mm copper plate.

Made a little video of it on YT.

Here are some additional pictures of the mod.

Maybe a "little" overkill... But hey, it's Voodoo2 cards, thers many of them. You can get some cards wich both are awesome and cheap on the same time, if you have just a little experince at the workbench. I used metal from a old rack race, a defective power supply and a diskdrive. The only thing i really had to pay for was the 80mmx15mm fans.

The Voodoo 2 cards are VP-510 with 110mhz memory.

    Have a nice day! :D

  • Hah, and here they are. Not that it makes too much sense to cool v²s like that, but it sure looks freaking awesome! :D I see you've solved the exhausts "the simple way". I'd have probably drilled holes instead, but that way your airflow is totally unobstructed, so your solution is better anyway! Just two small points of critizism (I'm never 100% satisfied, I know, I know...); 1.) The "Voodoo²" lettering paint looks a bit shoddy. Is this hand-painted? You might want to consider templates+airbrush instead, for a cleaner look. And 2.) Not that it matters, but as it is now, some air will escape right over the SLI connector. I get that you can't have the metal get too close to the pins, but maybe a piece of soft rubber mounted there - maybe on the inside, so it looks nicer - can cover that hole without posing any danger to the circuitry. :) Or maybe one could make the cooler wider, so that the existing hole covers the plug itself..

But hey, it's already awesome as it is, just saying! 8) :D

  • Nice cooling mod. It doesn't destory the card itself, it's removable, this is the way I like mods :)
One of the best mods I've seen so far. Keep up the great work.

I hope you will make a version 2.0. Covering the SLI-connector and the RAM-chips would be nice. So it looks cleaner and the air will not use the SLI-exit ;)
And you need a fan grill. The big black hole can look way nicer.

IMHO the coolest looking thing would be a radial fan at the end of the card, blowing directly to the outside.

  • Oh my gosh, it just like a nVidia GeForce WTF GTX or an RadeonHD *i don't know exact modelnumber*

And the best: They're for 3dfx SLI !

If there wasn't the writing "Voodoo2" on the side of the cooler, the illusion would be perfect.

Anyway, with this cooling solution, it would be possible to overclock the cards.

Really nice work man ! :respekt::respekt::respekt:

  • I hope it's ok spoiling that info, but as far as I remember from my PMs, that's planned as well, depending on how much space is available between chips and fans. :)

  • what do you think about using centrifugal fans?

I'll be doing that in some other mods, but i'll be after i have got me a 3D printer, it would be extremly nice to just make the fanhousing with a 3D printer, and then is it also easy to make more of them, incase some other people also want one. I allready have these two centrifugal fans i plan to use some time in the future.

But these is just old fans i had laying around, i'f i'm going to do stuff to mass production will i use fans wich i'm sure i can get a lot of.

lettering paint looks a bit shoddy. Is this hand-painted?

Yes, it's handwrited. Must admit thet i'm not proud of it myself. Used a speedmarker

Have killed a PSU wich i got some fans grills from, but it didnt look like how i wanted it, so choosed to remove it again. But the idea with fan grills is not totally lost yet, just have to find some better matrials. The Hole for the SLI connector is actually i mistake i did long ago, back when i made the casing did i have in mind that it should be placed in the top of the card, and cover the SLI connector, but when i realized that the housing was too small to cover both chips if it was in the top, did i screw the idea. But i had allready made the holes for it at that time. So had to also make it on the second fan housing to make them look the same.

But you just gave me an idea for another mod! XD Thank you.

I think it would be more effective, if you put heatsinks on the main chips.

As i told "the mounting system will be replaced by a 3mm copper plate." the copper plate will be cuttet to transfer the heat from the chips on to the fan housing itself. As it will work as one giant heatsink. But sadly havnt got the copper plates home yet.
BTW: Your english is good, and i think it's really nice to see people in your age an a forum like this. You are awesome! :respekt:

  • very cool Mod  Did you already install the cards ? I guess you need to keep quite some distance between both cards, usind 4 PCI Slots ? Do you have a special SLI Cable (selfmade), because of the distance ?

  • Thanks a lot! :D

All in all is they using the 4 slots as you say, i have SLI cables in all lengths. I'm also making SLI cable mods in all colors and stuff inclusive the "rainbow-ribbon" cables.

But yes i have ionstalled the cards to see it they fitted inside the case and stuff, but not tested them yet. I really have to get my test setup ready. But have so many projects laying around wich i have to move. Making mods and modelskips is really a bad coctail. I have even got my 128mb voodoo 5500 with rev 320 chips home a month ago. But havnt got a chance to test it yet cuz i have to make the space for it.

    "Why so serious!"

  • Yes, it's from Osckhar, it's based on a Voodoo 5500 MAC, but it has no DVI output, but it has the SMD components for the interface. So i just have to solder e new DVI interface on it. But my crazy mind is also saying "mod a HDMI adapter on to the PCB" and make a fancy bracket for it. Maybe thers space for both.

    "Why so serious!"

  • That looks like if it's Nuclear Powered leeel xD:topmodel:
Just wow man Dem Coolers on dem CPU's doh 8|:steinigung:

If that is an ABiT BP6 you might be able to go P3-S Tualatins in there with some mod I seen others do in the past, but then again it may be a long shot though.
