Meet the world's largest Descent/Freespace Game collection.

  • Hello everyone

This is something I never showed here before, thought I'd post it, since it's been quite a ride, also confirmed by the Makers of Descent 1,23, Freespace 1 &2 and Overload they go now as Revival Studio's and all the Descent & Freespace communities, this is by far the largest collection of the Descent & Freespace game series to date.

Here the original Topic of the Descent/Freespace Collection at Interplay Forums:

    http://www.interplay.com/forums/viewtop…&p=85234#p85234

It seems the Interplay link is broken so my main topic is here at the Overload forums:
    https://playoverload.com/forums/topic/h…ectors-intro-8/

So here my story and my Descent/Freespace collection, something most of the Descent & Freespace community people know about, I just want to give you lot my insights of the best game ever created by mankind.

After some years of collecting and being a Pyro Jockey for over 20 years all way back since it all began on October 21, 1994 when the first Descent Demo rolled out I was hooked immediately, and since then I waited for every part of the series to arrive but never thought about this collecting feeling which I started about 2 years ago and now it has turned into a Descent obsession some call it Obi’s Descent Archive and others a museum heh.

Anyways name it what you all like here’s some new pics and I want to thank a lot of you for helping get a few of these rare wanna haves.

Today I gave each album a new sub section so here’s the collection 105 parts as I have counted them all yesterday after adding a Descent mission disc and a Spacetec IMC Cooperation Spaceorb 360 game controller .

As I registered to this forum a few days ago i thought I’d add a topic of the World’s Largest Descent / Freespace Collection, the one I have collected and gathered the past 20+ years

What I did is divide it all in to sub groups, all the Product names speak for themselves, click it and you enter the sub gallery of that item .

On October 21, 2010 this lovely set arrived from MasternX, a guy that has a contact with one of the cleaners that worked @ Interplay HQ back in 2003 to 2004, when it was being cleared after it shut down xD

So here’s the parts in a one shot:

That frame hung in the Interplay HQ Office hallways, them CD-R’s are host software of Descent 1 and 2, the one with the scratches is the Descent 1 Alpha disc, this is where it all began before it was going final, the one from 1996 is the host disk for Descent Anniversary Edition me thinks hence the date of the disk, unless some Interplay Employee’s can help me out here!

This came to me all thanks to MasternX from this website:
    http://forums.my-collections.eu/

This is probably one of the most rarest of all items I was given as a gift, after helping a friend Acquire a rare 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A2 2600 [Week 26 Year 2000] from an ex-3dfx engineer for a good deal, my 3dfx report can be read here @ EVGA Graphics to see my3dfx background, just for the ones that are questioned about this xD

Here a Pre-Production Sample of Descent3: Mercenary USA! This is the Pre-Release version which is Factory Sealed in the original factory cellophane + NOT FOR RESALE Decal under the seal on the box! A very rare sight :topmodel:

Great and many thanks to a good friend of mine from Minnesota, USA he goes by the nick name of “rottentreats” he’s from the 3dfx forums Falconfly.de

This is certainly a gift of many words

Here all the four variants of Descent I and II The Definitive Collection all are Factory Sealed in their original cellophane! These items are from 1998, so it’s been like this for the past 16 years…

  • here the entire Collection 96 of 102 items, my floor was not large enough :spitze:

Even though I have 105 items hence the odd D1 Game expansion disc and the Spaceorb 360, these pics were made a while back, back on March 16, 2013 to be exact 8)

But it will give you an exact idea on how large this collection is if all in one space :ugeek:

New pics will be made again sometime when I get an other odd 20 new items or so :topmodel:

    Top lot:

    Middle lot:

    Bottom lot:

    Entire lot:

Here some mouse pads I made myself via artscow.com:

Descent 2 Promo Mousepad, a Gift from D2X-XL Moderator Frustikus:

20 of these were handed out in only one shopping center in a city of Central Germany ( forgot the name of this place tho ) and no where else, it's extremely rare and near impossible to find.
It was a gift of honor due to my respect and devotion for the Descent & Freespace game series and for having the largest and most complete archive of these game series in the world.
It's seen as fan mail I had more such cool things sent to me as gift, that I am very thankful for <3

    Descent 2 & Freespace 2 Case Mod:

PyroGX from Descent 2 Release painted in 1999:

Hercules MK III, Vesudan Dreadnaught & Shivan Carrier from Freespace2 Painted in 1999:

Descent IV: Invasion RTF file of Floppy Disk:

Here some D4 files of the pre-release of the game that I got from one of it's developers, this was for the game that was going to be released by interplay in September of 2003, but was cancelled it was named Descent IV: Invasion:

Here the final box art design:

    D4 shield orb:

    D4 Pyro-SX

    D4 Pyro-ZX the SX replacement:

The 1500 polygon D4 Pyro-GX being made for D4, this model was also usable in D3 with Pyromania 1.5::

This would of been the successor of the Phoenix Interceptor, yet this one would have stealth capabilities:

Here how this Interceptor was developed:

    Here the Old Scratch 2.0:

    The new Full map item:

Here my ultra rare 1998 Descent: Freespace: The Great War Interplay Developer’s T-Shirt

  • Back in 2009, a good friend from the Sol Contingency Community made the 3D Printed model of the infamous Pyro-GX Starfighter, this wonderful piece was sent to me to respect the collection and archive I have been maintaining all those years:

Here compared to an Incom T-70 Advanced X-Wing Starfighter from StarWays Episode VII & VIII

And here compared to the T70 & Descent II: The Infinite Abyss:

And Descent 2 Eur, the Pyro-GX model is smaller than a CD case to give you an idea of it's small size:

My favorite of all time is Dimensions for Descent Factory Sealed which is extremely rare it also has the original price tag on the box, even being this was a map disk of 75 D1 maps made by D1 fans across the world , there is also Levels of The World but that is something more common that this beauty:

Dimensions For Descent Factory Sealed USA, 1995 by Lasersoft:

    Descent2 EUR

    Descent II The Infinite Abyss:

The Descent Macplay series are very cool too:

    The Three different D3 USA’s Mac/ PC / Linux

Also I backed Descent Underground with a sweet 250 USD Pledge as Backer #3144 :)

But due to funding issues I had this refunded but still was able to pledge 150 USD.
Sadly Descent Underground didn't do so well, even I was at the time a very active player and supporter of their forums I was ggiven this banner to use as well as Backer of the first Descent game after 16 years time:

Overload I also supported only have [pledged 50 Eur, I wish I Pledged 400+ on this game, this game is by far miles better than Descent Underground in every way, now with OlMod from Arne & Overload Server Tool & Overload Control Tool from Maestro Overload has become what it should of been:

Anyways I also managed to get a factory sealed version of Descent II: The Infinite Abyss USA, this is considered extremely rare and very hard to find in this quality:

This is how I store everything :)

Away from sunlight for perfect storage :spitze:

The last item I added was the Spacetec Space Orb 360, this seems to be the best gamepad for 6DoF games Descent series in general:
The one I have is mint in Box as well, ideal for this collection there is even a Pyro-GX on the box so yeah a must have for sure :)

Anyways This is pretty much it, I didn't add anything else since all the original copies that were made are within this collection, Descent & Freespace related of course.

Enjoy the topic & contents :)

  • The thread link to the Interplay forums somehow throws me a 404 :/

But damn, dude. I haven't seen anyone so dedicated to the Descent series. Sick collection!:thumbup:

Wasn't Descent developed by Parallax and published by Interplay? As far as I know they were the guys behind Red Faction and Saints Row and are now part of Deep Silver.

    Not entirely sure though.

Anyway, take good care of it! This is not an irrelevant part of gaming history ;)

Edit: oh man, just saw the screenshot of 3DSMax 3 when it was still made by Discreet ... time flies.

    Voodoo-Kiste (seit 3dfx BayernLAN 2007):

    Dualatin: GA-6VTXD, 2x P3-S 1400, 1GB SDR, 2x 60GB, Hercules Radeon 8500 128MB

  • Hah thanks man and yeah this is one of the longest going collections of mine since the Dino-Riders.
Descent 1 & 2 were made by Parallax Software and Interplay was the one that sold the games
Descent 3 + Mercenary were made by Volition Software & Outrage Software as where Freespace, Freespace , Silent Threat & Freespace 2 were all from Volition Software but all were sold by Interplay.

Interplay was the Publisher for that part of the series, Descent IV: Invasion would of been a product from Volition Software as where Descent 5 would be done by Outrage and this would of been swapped by Volition & Outrage as the releases would go, but sadly D4 never became a thing and D3 Mercenary was the realty final part of the series.

Here the D4 rolescript that was gifted to me by AlterFox one of the D4 writers:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/in5fjwqx1vqt…0Story.rar?dl=0

As for the Interplay forums they must of been taken down , new main thread is here at the Overload forums:

  • You sir are a crazy man! Awesome collection!

We are Microsoft of Borg. Assimilation is imminent. Resistance is... Error in Borg.dll. Press OK to abort.

  • Haha Yeah I am a little bit crazy I guess :topmodel: Thanks dow xD

Here's a slogan I always stick to especially when it's about Descent xD

If it's not Descent, it's just an interactive screensaver

    or

Descent is the best game for your PC since floppy drives!

  • Hey guys, i need your help. I need your help to enter the DescentBB Forum. I am absolutely not descent expert and they ask, a probably easy, question as flooding protection. Could you help me with the image and the list? Thanks a lot...it is to get my FFPro up and running again with Win10, but i got some jittering problems i wanna ask the experts there that develop the Gameport/USB Adapter.

    Thx in advance,

    Tobi

  • Jajajaj pls read my post again, i cannot register...its descent questions...

it is for the net forum....anyway...its about the question.

Einmal editiert, zuletzt von Tobi (24. Januar 2021 um 12:30)

  • All I asked is what forum it was... thus you could of simply replied with "oh it's the Descentbb.net forum" yet I was hoping it would not be that hard to reply to :/
As for what you are trying to ask uhm no that is not something I can help you with, you would have to contact the forum owner liking mailing him perhaps.
Then hoping he wail reply, and I have not used those forums since 2004 a 2005, kind of surprised they are still used heh. I'ma collector & archiver yes I play the games but mostly I test games and collect them , well used to.

I never cared much for the forums.
