Yamaha YFM724E-V SV550 PCI Sound card, quite the midi miracle maker for the PCI Bus!

  • Hey all :)

Here's something very cool and worth talking about when it comes to a good midi music sound card for the PCI Local Bus but also nice for them classic dos games as well.

All meet the Yamaha YFM724E-V SV550 PCI sound card:

This little card is a miracle for those that seek nice Midi music quality for a PCI based sound card and for those that don't have an ISA slot for an AWE64 Gold, Gravis Ultrasound MAx or anything similar, this little card offers quite alot of midi greatness and seems rather underrated and not so well known.

Here a good review of this particular card by HighTreason610

And here an other video made by CrazeeWeegeMan47 letting you hear it's midi music quality, it seems to have a good quality DAC as well and does not sound like a tin can :topmodel:

I do plan on picking up one of these cards and explore them more, once I do have my card I will also try out the Yamaha YFM744LL II< this one seems to be a slightly updated variant of the YMF724E-V SV550.

If any of you have either of these cards feel free to tell me your experiences with them or any kind of advice, that would be great :)
Tips are also welcome for Win9x & Win2K/XP users.

So I look forward to the reactions :)

  • That Yamaha Sound Card I have installed in my Voodoo 4 4500 System and it is a great high compatible device with high quality sound and Midi WT.

    My is the Waveforce WF-192XG.

If you want to go over the top so try to get the Yamaha SW 1000XG.

Slightly moved into the profesional music production, but the best you can get when going along with Yamaha devices.

My experience with both cards - the best you can get for a Windows 98/ME PC.

For a 192XG a reasonable price may be around 50.-€

For a 1000XG you shold be ready to give around 100.-€

  • Hmm I see, yea always loved Yamaha Synthesizers but to find a midi sound card with similar sounds these kind of cards do come close in ways, okay nothing can be compared to the Yamaha CS-80 of course but yea, for a sound card they are pretty amazing for sure.

I still want the YFM724E-V SV550 PCI as it's the one card I wanted to try out a friend of mine in Romania has one and she said it's the best cheap solution for the PCI bus for a decent OPL3 supported sound card solution that also has a nice Midi wave table in it, they go for around 25 to 40 euros very respectable prices and also work well in Win2K Pro, the OS I love most and that is a requirement to me.

Not sure if the ones you mentioned work well in Win2K pro as well if so would be nice to hear samples of them playing Midi music files and in compared to the YFM724E-V SV550 PCI.

For those wondering what a Yamaha CS-80 Synthesizer from 1977 sounds like this video by Ron from Syntaur gives you a nice demo of it doing the Blade Runner tune from 1978:

Here the restoration video by Sam Mims from Syntaur:

And here the sound clod of the music that was made with their CS-80 for that episode

The 1000XG would be the one I'd choose then, best quality in sound is ever welcoming :)
But for a later project, I will for sure invest in to more Sound cards this year, just something cool to play around with.
To have a CS-80 would always be amazing but they go for around 38K a 40K USD now that is if you find a working one, only 750 were made worldwide.

Midi sound cards to Synthesizer keyboards it's a wonderful world to love tbh.

  • Ah the CS-80, a wonderful analogue synthesizer. Works with polyphnic technology. Sound overlay or something. I don't know too much about it.

But as far as I know the SW1000XG is the last and best PCI soundcard from Yamaha. It should also work with Win2K, because there are W2K drivers for it.
