Benchmarking V56K Replika "S.U.X.", "Snow White", "Strange God" inkl. Owner's List

  • Weiß jemand, wie man Vsync für Direct3D in den 3Dfx Referenztreibern (v1.04.00 / v1.04.01b) bei Windows98/ME abschaltet? Es gibt für Direct3D keine Einstell-Option, nur für OpenGL/Glide...

Does anyone know how to force Vsync OFF for Direct3D in the 3Dfx reference drivers (v1.04.00 / v1.04.01b) in Windows98/ME? There is no setting/option to switch it off, only for OpenGL/Glide...

  • I don't have a 6k card.

Nice you also tested d3d in ut , so I gave it a go, win98 is a mess, but under xp works(ish).

Enable auto mipmaps in voodoo settings, needs to be set in both win98 and xp, then it works for both.

Gameplay test, both 1920x800, fov130, first 32bit, second 16bit. 16 bit has a bit more washed out colors(brighter), hard to show with this capture cards since it does the same :D, transparency(water, hp shield) isnt displayed propperly. Same in 32bit for some materials, but atleast you get water.

Perf for this run was 56.43fps vs 91.41fps for 16 bit, still some slowdowns, but overall smooth and nice to play. Happy it sorted itself out, cus before I was playing in glide with 1280x1024 with fov103 and stretched to 16:9, and this now is just great to play.

  • Hi, I can confirm to own a "Snow White (AGP)" but I dont have a sticker with a serial number on it...early model I guess;-)

    1.) 128MB VRAM vs. 256MB VRAM:

    3.) Betriebssystem(e):

Raff vielleicht? Was machen Deine Benchmark-Sessions?

    Spoiler anzeigen

The (first) Benchmark-Post is now finalized from my point of view - including all diagrams! So what is my conclusion?

    1) 128MB VRAM vs. 256MB VRAM:

From my benchmarks, there is no speed advantage at all with 256MB VRAM - on the contrary! Mostly the Snow White with 128MB VRAM is (minimal) faster, but above all with 256MB VRAM there are most violent graphic errors with Unreal Tournament '99 in Direct3D and texture errors with Glide (by the way, my Voodoo4 4800 with 64MB VRAM delivers the same picture - also here 1 VSA-100 chip has access to 64MB). So I stay with 128MB VRAM for the time being, but this can be easily changed via a jumper if needed.

    2.) Drivers:

Despite the perhaps larger setting possibilities there are problems with OpenGL with Amigamerlin / SFFT under Windows 2000 / Windows XP. In addition, the 3Dfx drivers are (almost) always faster. The only "speed advantage" of Amigamerlin / SFFT is in the CPU score under Windows ME, but this is not reflected in the overall score. Thus I will rely on the (partly unofficially continued) 3Dfx drivers.

    3.) Operating system(s):

Since my "tower" computer already uses DOS/Windows 3.11, Windows 95c and Windows 98SE, I will use Windows ME as DOS-based operating system on my "Snow White System" (just for the sake of variety - and besides, I haven't found a V56K system with Windows ME here yet :topmodel:).

As NT-based operating system I'll try Windows XP for now, since my "Aalchemy Turning" system already uses Windows 2000 and Windows XP has a higher compatibility to "slightly more modern" games in my opinion. I'm curious how the Snow White will handle games from the era up to 2004...

If anyone else can contribute data / experience on the V56K (replica), always happy to post here. Maybe this post (or a relaunched V56K benchmark post ) will become a sticky thread?

Raff maybe? How are your benchmark sessions going? Will there be a PCGH article about the cards sometime soon?

Hi Alliance2000, I wanted to congratulate you on the excellent work you have done. I know what it's like to prepare these tests and the effort it takes to perform a great job, as well as many others in this forum who have performed tests and written Threads like this. Your work is really well done.

I wanted to suggest you, to give the possibility to other users to add new results following your line of publication, to prepare exel files, as Anthony did for other projects, making them available to all those who want to contribute. Then you can use these files to update, or create new graphs with the new data they send you.

Thanks again for your good work. :)

  • Hmm AmigaMerlin & SFFT aka Super FurryFurryThing are two different people, the results with the bright yellow bars are unreadable as well as the bright yellow text, still I am not impressed with the results compared to a 5500, these scores are too low for a V5 6K kind of card.
This is what the slow SDRAM is causing as for the KT333 system use an AthlonXP 2700+ top 3200+ in this range you should get a bigger a gap.

Try the driver ps47 & I worked on, you should get much better results with Win2K Pro & XP Pro
SFFT Alpha41 modified by ps47 & myself, grab it here:

Just use the latest 3dfx Tools for the control panel or KoolSmokey's V.COntrol 1.82b, this adds an OC utility.

Does anyone have a better idea / tool to show benchmarks here in the forum? Like a community page where everyone (after confirmation of course) can add results and we could build up the ultima Voodoo Benchmark database? Because there are so many very good and detailed Benchmark sessions published here as various posts...

ciacara72 Thank you for your kind words! I added my excel list to the post, so anyone can add their results.

Gold Leader I forgot to change the yellow color to purple - exchanged the diagram. I have no time at the moment, but I will try your Alpha47 driver with Windows XP as soon as I'm back home in 2 weeks....

Gotta love love this project though! :respekt::respekt::respekt:
Many thanks for sharing your experiences here I am sure it has helped some people :)

  • Sorry I forgot to ask that results of Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Descent3 & Freespace 2 would of been nice too, if using Win2K Pro & XP Pro could you test with the driver ps47 & I worked on, we focused on D3D performance with this driver, I was main tester I help test this driver and help make work arounds to getting it stable, ideal reso's are 1280x960 & 1600x1200 for a 6K as going by the 4:3 aspect ratio :)

Nice review so far man, I'm glad you got it all sorted out

  • Hallo zusammen!
