Aahaha, mein moderner FiiO USB DAC scheint kein Midi zu mögen. Klingt fast wie eine Soundblaster AWE64 unter DOS. Blast from the Past, sodenn das etwas wert sein sollte.
Sicher mal nicht General Midi, sofern das auf moderner Hardware überhaupt geht? Auf jeden Fall ein Haufen Klassiker, danke!--
Aahaha, my modern FiiO USB DAC doesn't seem to like Midi. Almost sounds kinda like a Soundblaster AWE64 on DOS. Blast from the past if that's worth anything.
Surely not General Midi, if that's even possible on modern PC hardware? In any case that's one lot of classics, thanks for that! -
Yea they sound fantastic with my Terratec Promedia Audio System EWS64 XL that backfire Trace repaired & gave a full gold recap with 49 + 6 Nichicon FG Professional Audio Grade Gold Capacitors:

This card with it's 5.25" Digital Interface drive unit looks clean and works even better than a new one, the gold caps clear out the sound distortion and also get rid of signal noise by providing a very clean sound, it also support 4 Speaker Midi surround as well , not many sound cards have this advantage except for the Yamaha Sound Wave 1000 XG PCI and the never released Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold II CT4560. -

VirtualMIDISynth | CoolSoft
You can grab the free sound fonts from here
free-soundfonts-sf2-2019-04 directory listingAlso don't forget to add the Coolsoft Midi mapper:
MIDIMapper | CoolSoft
it works great with my Creative Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus for example. -
Danke, werde ich heute abend ausprobieren!

Thanks, will try today in the evening!

Yea tons of sound fonts as well the one I like using most with my AE-5 Plus is these:
Yamaha XG Sound Set
Yamaha Tyros 4 Just T4 fixed
These two get the best out of the AE-5 Pus chip, sadly no Terratec EWS64 XL emulation as the Crystal & Dream chips go.
The EWS64 XL still wins even when compared to this emulation program, the EWS64 XL is a whole new level of midi by it's self.
Just make a folder and dump all the sound fonts in there.
There is some good news thought, this Midi emulator can sound better than an AWE64 Gold when using the Yamaha sound fonts, so not all hope is lost ether.
So there is that, plus there is also an AWE64 Gold Emulation file which is this one: -
Hmm, I tried that just now, installing VirtualMIDISynth and adding the Yamaha sound fonts, but after rebooting, MIDIs didn't play at all anymore. Just silence. In WinAmp 5.666 I could select the DirectMusic Microsoft Synthesizer Output instead of the Microsoft MIDI Mapper one to make it work again, but it sounds just like it used to. In WMP, no dice at all. It seems the "VirtualMIDISynth #1" device just does not work. Also, I cannot select it in WinAmp, as the device is simply not present in the drop-down list for picking a MIDI playback device. In the VirtualMIDISynth menu itself, the "VirtualMIDISynth #1" device is selected as the Windows default.
What am I doing wrong?
-
Just make sure you have one activated mixing can be somewhat troublesome
Also have the sound fonts placed in a separate folder as I have done here:
Here the CooMIDISynth configuration program settings that I use:

You don't use Winamp you need to run the CoolMIDISynth program along side it.
it works well with Win10 & 11, never tried it in Win7 though but that should be supported afaik. -
Huh? I cannot use WinAmp? I am absolutely, 100% positively not dumping WinAmp.
I thought this was a system-wide solution, that would introduce a virtual MIDI device that any application with MIDI support can use?
-
Oh you use Cool Soft Virtual MIDI Synth as a background program because this is needed for the Midi Emulation, WinAmp is the player you use, with Win10 I use WinAmp 5.9.2 which was released in 2023.
And this is how I do it on modern system the retro PC's are easy because of the EWS64 XL & AWE664 Gold the hardware does it all, but for new gen systems this is truly the solution, just combine both to get the result you seek.
Not sure what OS you are using tho and what version of Winamp either, Winamp 2.81 was my favorite but not sure that runs in Win10 on a 64 Bit system, I could test the version you have and see if I can get it going, idea?
in theory any kind of sound card will work it'[s only that Cool Soft Virtual MIDI Synth is a separate tool that runs in the background while WinAmp plays the music with the aid of Cool Soft Virtual MIDI Synth, that is how it works, sorry explaining has never been easy for me, but I do try
-
WinAmp 5.666. That's basically WinAmp 2 with Unicode support (I want that because I listen to lots of Japanese stuff with lots of moonrunes in their filenames and lots of ☆ and ★ and ♡ and ♥ and in my specific case lots of ⚢, you get it. In this case, the operating systems are Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2 and Windows 11 23H2.
-
not sure if it works with WinXP X64 but Win 11 X64 should work like it does in Win10 pro x64 that I use here.
but maybe because you are using that older version that may be the culprit to the issue, I'd have no idea of otherwise, I use Winamp 5.92 just for the player and the Cool Soft Virtual MIDI Synth as a background program, this works fine for me, maybe try a newer version of Winamp and see if you can get it working that way, you can always revert back to the older version. -
Ah, meine XP x64 Workstation hat grade Probleme (sie läuft, das sehe ich über's Netzwerk, aber das Display ist schwarz, Ausgabe weg), also habe ich das auf meiner Spielebox mit Windows 11 23H2 probiert.--
Ah, my XP x64 Workstation has some problems right now (it's running, I can verify that via the network, but the display is black, output gone), so I actually tried this on my gaming system running Windows 11 23H2. -

I'm on Win10 Pro x64 UK 22H1 and it runs flawlessly with WinAmp 5.93 as the player and Cool Soft Virtual MIDI Synth as the Midi emulator, a perfect combination. -
Here an updated version, sorry guys.
