Here's my 4th retro rebuild Gradinko SMP 2000, my Dual P3/EB 1000Mhz system with the ABiT VP6!

  • Hey all, well here's my 4th retro PC build also my first 2CPU system as well which contains the original CPU's & Mainboard from March 28, 2000, and the case I got in 2008 with the ram kit my dad gave me in 2008, but also the same coolers the system had in March 28, 2000, it's as authentic as I had it back then, just a different and better graphics card option, the 3dfx card I seek is a V4 4500 PCI, if anyone could spare me one please DM me about it, as I have plans for the V4 4500 PCI to V4 4800 PCI mod as well, but yea need a card for that first, which is for now a later worry.

So here the original mainboard, CPU's & system memory, which I was able to buy back from an old friend in Adelaide South Australia for a very sweet deal.

    That are these parts:
(Excluding the MSI card just above the HD 5870)

Micro Star International MS9130 K8T Master 2-FAR Manual
    ABiT VP6 Manual
ABit VP6 with VIA Apollo Pro 133A Chipset
    2x Intel Pentium !!!/EB Coppermine 1000Mhz CPU's SL4MF's with 1.70 Core Voltage each
    4x 512MB PC-133 ECC Reg HP/Micron Server Ram.
    Sapphire Vapor-X ATi Radeon HD 5870 PCI-E 1024MB 256Bit GDDR5

Here a closeup of the CPU's & RAM.

Here the new never used TITAN Majesty V's these are repacked Thermaltake Golden Orbs for Socket 370 that I picked up from a guy in Czech Republic for 56 Eur for the two:, and a pair of Intel Pentium !!!/EB Coppermine 1000Mhz SL52R 1.75v CPU's from March, 2001, and 11x original Intel Pentium !!! aluminum decals, never can have too many of these!

Here the main graphics card I just picked up from a seller in Austria for just 99 Eur / 116 Eur incl Shipping!
This will be my main graphics card for the Dual P3/EB 1000 system in the ABiT VP6

    ATi Radeon 8500 AGP 64MB 128Bit DDR Rev.A 0152
    https://www.ebay.ie/itm/236462296135Here

Here the pics from the seller for reference and it's a working unit as well as the 3D Mark screenshot clearly shows:

The Sound card is this Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Rev.A 1304; which I have laying here in my retro hardware collection, it's a fully working unit as well:

Here the network card, an Intel Pro 1000 MT Desktop Adapter Rev.A 1504

Here that Enermax EG565AX-VE 535 Watt PSU and it's indeed a new unit, made during week 27 of year 2006, it's new from old stock got it for 102 Eur incl shipping from France to my place in Netherlands.

Here it from the insides very new and clean:

And here Addtronics 7896A Server Tower with the two Seagate Barracuda V 250GB 7200 RPM HDD's each with 2MB Cache and the NEC 3500A 16x/40x DVD/CD RW Drive unit:

So there you have it, once all parts are here as the mainboard, CPU's Ram and graphics card go, then I will start building it and make pics as I go until it is one and up and running WinXP Pro x86 USA + SP3.

Stay tuned for more as I wait until all the parts have arrived 8)

  • How did you get 11K in 3DMark01 with a Pentium III 1000EB?

My current Pentium III 1000E build Tops Out at around 6,2K?

that 3D mark score is from the seller of that R200 board, it's evidence that I bought a working card, I am sure he used a T-Bird 1400 or P4 2400 Northwood A or even faster I really have no idea, it's just a confirmation that the card works.

6200 is more realistic for a R200, my Parhelia AGP 256MB DDR gets 6800+ in my AthlonXP 2200+, in 3D mark the Radeon 8500 could score higher than a Parhelia, in the end I never used a Radeon 8500 before this will be my first R200 experience, the R300 was the first ATi chip I used which was during week 25 of year 2002, just after the R200 era.

  • Ah okay. :)

Feel free to use ATi Trueform If you Like!

Very pleasant in Halflife and welcome to the Radeon 8500 owner group!

Yea many thank s for the warm welcome as well.

In the long run I always wanted an original R200 based graphics card, later releases came with 128MB DDR SDRAM & DDR BGA ram chips as well, some of these models from 3rd Party vendors like the one from Hercules aka the 3D Prophet 8500 AGP 128MB DDR came with a nice blue PCB and ram sinks, always a card I'd be willing to add someday, as long I can find and afford one.

The First Radeon I used was a Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro, I never experienced any ATi card before that one, after finding out that the Radeon 8500 has Shader Model 1.4, which is something I always wanted to explore and see what it has in difference if compared to Shader Model 1.3 for example.

So the best way to find this out is to buy a real Radeon 8500 and go from there, which got me to this card from that Austrian ebayer.
the card is also en-route from Austria to me as I last got notified by.

  • Huh? Warum? Ich hab gedacht Version 8.1 war nur ein Mini-Update mit ein paar Verbesserungen in Sachen Benutzbarkeit für Entwickler, aber ohne wirklich signifikante neue Features?

    --

Huh? Why? I thought version 8.1 was just a minor update with some usability improvements for developers, but with out any really significant new features?

Edit.

    --

Hmm, but shader model 1.4 was introduced with Direct3D 9.0, no? Mei memories are quite hazy when it comes to that stuff though.

  • You can run DX8.1 in HL2 and it looks so much better than DX 8.0.

I got a black 128MB Radeon 8500 (not LE) with TSOP Memory.

And not only that you have AT TruForm support in HL2 as well this is the first type of Tessellation basically, making characters look much better rendered and less square like combine this with FSAA x4 & AF x16 and HL2 will look much more lifelike despite using DX 8.1 with SM 1.4 support over the GF3 cards and Parhelia cards that had to do it with SM 1.3 instead and no TruForm at all, Parhelia does have Displacement Mapped Bump Mapping so it can do a similar thing like TruForm, but once a game does not support Displacement Mapped Bump mapping it runs the game without the extra effect.

ATi's R200 was very high-end and ahead in time for it's timeline, but also the only SM 1.4 graphics chip of all time as well, which makes it quite unique.

  • The ABiT VP6 with the Dual P3/EB 1000Mhz CPU's and 4x 512MB PC-133 ECC Reg Server Ram kit arrived today with the second Sapphire Vapor-X ATi Radeon HD 5870 PCI-E 1024MB 256Bit GDDR5 Rev.C1 0948 graphics card, here the VP6 set, regarding to this thread, the 5870 is for an other project.

First Production Revision which was made in year 2000 during week 48, this means I bought the system somewhere between November 27 & December 03 of year 2000, I remember getting this board when it was on the market for just a mere 2 days, but since I ordered it it arrived after my birthday of 2000, so roughly on December 12, 2000., much later than I had expected it to have been around.

Here the VP6 with the Golden Orbs installed:

Stay tuned for more as the system gets rebuilt today! 8)

Oddly enough the Info by GPU-Z and Everest clearly show that my Radeon 8500 has the following specs:

    Pixel Shaders: 4
    Vertex Shaders: 1
    TMU's 8
    ROPS: 4

    That being: 4 - 1 - 8 - 4
But if going to the R200 database at TechPowerUp these have this config:

    Pixel Shaders: 4
    Vertex Shaders: 2
    TMU's 8
    ROPS: 4

    And that being 4 - 2 - 8 - 4

So I am not sure whymy card only shows 1 Vertex Shader instead of 2, LE boards have the same shader specs as the traditional 8500's, but lower core/mem clocks of 250Mhz core/mem instead of 275Mhz core/mem like my card has per default.

If anyone can explain this that would be grand!

  • Here some 3D Mark test runs I did with this system here with the standard Windows XP Driver for the Radeon 8500, this also sets the AGP setting to 2x and has FAGP Fast Writes disabled:

3D Mark 2000 default test result:

    5858 pts

3D Mark 2000 default test result with ATi Catalyst 6.11

    5870 pts

3D Mark 2001 Second Edition B330 gave a similar difference:

Here with the default WinXP Driver for the Radeon 8500:

    5688 pts

And here default test with ATi Catalyst 6.11:

    5714 pts

That is the difference of AGP x2 without Fast Writes and AGP x4 with Fast Writes 8)

    p.s.
This is also ideal Dual CPU support patches for Quake II, Quake III Arena and Half-Life
We found a dual Cpu patch (SMP) that works on old games. \ VOGONS

Quite something I will try out with that Dual P3/EB 1000 and it's R200 for sure!

  • Thats right, so you have to look at Game 4 to compare. Because there is no CPU Limitation.

ohh I get it, that is truly impressive then, does 3D Mark 2001 SE B330's Nature use Shader Model 1.4 by any chance? This may explain how the ATi R200 is having little trouble rendering it real time.
