• Hallo, 3dfx!

  • Personally I think 3dfx's death was by keep on delaying the Rampage, this chip was actually planned after the SST-2 aka Voodoo 2., the second major failure that lead to their demeise was by using more than half of the Rampage designers team on banshee, a product that actaully made no great successes, the products of the compettitors were much more successful as where their own Voodoo2 in SLI was alot faster well, so frankly, Banshee was a good idea, but to be very honest, it nothing that new under the sun as where 3d tech went, it was handly for those that wanted to play glide games and do 2D stuff via 1 card but this was really it, if Banshee had 2 TMU's, it would done alot better. ;)

Then Rampage was delayed again, Voodoo3 and Velocity series came, Rampage was delayed again, then came Voodoo5, though the first v5 cards had stabillity issues of some sort and the new batch of cards would be released 3 weeks later, V5 was going to be placed against geForce 256 DDR , but cause of the delay it was palced againtthe powerful GeForce2 GTS,and yups in most rounds it could hardly keep up with even a geForce2 MX 400.., how ever for the Apple macintosh group, the Voodoo5 5500 PCI was their best card ever, but shamefyully it was too little too late, the apple numbers as sales went were also nog big enough to keep 3dfx afloat.

After V5, Rampage was delayed again and after this came Voodoo4 which really was no success at all, because this thing was aimed aginst GeForce2MX and well this card crushed the V4 all round.

The cards V3 Velo, V5 and V4 were actually used to fill in the gaps.. and after all these delays 3dfx lost millions and this lead them to their fate --> Bankruptcy

Things could of been better if they forced more work on Rampage instead of them delays, since delays cost time and time costs money and this did cost the entire company as well, shame it happened this way but hey that's life, just the hard truth all of us had to face. :|

  • Rampage after Voodoo2? Even if 3dfx would have canceled the Banshee, V3, V4, V5 in order to bring the Rampage as fast as possible the Rampage would not that fast as it is today (on the papaer).

Yeah she was planned after Voodoo2 :) Okay it would not of been as fast but this is because when you keep delaying the concept and then keep on changing the original design with something else this cost 3dfx alot of tiem thus money :) But yes it would of performed more like a turbo charged V3, anyways still not bad for 1998 / 1998 right? :)

3Dfx Tweaker knows alot about this, I'll ask him to leave a post, he's the Dutch SST-2 expert and he also told me about this back in it's day.

It's also stated on gary's page as a rumor heh well it was more than just a rumor ;)

"Rumor has it the Rampage chip was in development as far back as 1997 and was delayed by feature creep and members of the team being drawn off by other projects. I'll try to look into those rumors but contacting a few friends of mine and see if we can come up with some hard information. You can download an internal Rampage Power Point file here dated April 1999 but the file indicates it was modified October of 2000 so chances are some of the information is suspect."

  • 3dfx is NVIDIA for me now, NVIDIA has SLI like 3dfx did in the past which is kinda cool :) The SLI dream lives on this way.

But true the good ole Glide days? Nothing much can replace these, that is one thing for sure 8)

Todestag 3DFX gedenken.
