Meine Voodoo5 6000 Rev A3 3400

  • Gold Leader: Thanks for your information. I don't have enough knowledge about the V5 6k. Well, i thought it was an additional mainboard choise. Let's hope the best and feinripp can solved the problem.

Anytime man, if I can be of help I will at least try it :)

Everyone from x-3dfx is there to help out, feinripp also just joined our group a few days ago, I will try get a hold on to Hank Semenec, as I did send him a PM, just for further advice on the matter, even that osckhar also is planning on helping out.
It's that I just hope this card can be saved, the Re.A3 3400 is one of the rarest cards known, to my knowledge, not something we would want to lose from the archive of functional Rev.A3 3400 stand alone.

    I think mikepedo's Voodoo 5 6000 also had a (temporary) "transparent bar/stripe/line" in 3D.

    Anyway...
I want one! Is there one for sale anywhere? :)

That is quite a problem tm having what almost 18 a 20 cards, selling them for 3000+ Eur a piece.... I can ask around for you, even that it has been ages I done such a thing :steinigung:
Yet I was able to help some people get a 6000 for a very good deal, I'll just ask around; just dunno where or to who :X
Still I can't even believe I don't even have my old card. aka Green Leader the Rev.A 3700 Sold that to some Romanian guy named Murfisor...
That was probably my biggest mistake ever, sometimes I ask myself why do I still remember that :X Not something I can ever forgive myself for, yet I have been trying to accept it...

But I do have to admit I still regret what I done, even that it will be hard to more like near to impossible for me to re-obtain on all I have lost,
Thus I kind of chosen to be the moral support type and helping others achieve such goals.

  • Hello guys,

Later a lot of hours testing component by component checking smd IC components controll 2D engine and all worked perfect seems I found the problem.

As you can see in the pictures there are 2 pads in short on VSA100. GND+MA_A6 and it can cause the lines on memory. Such pad make reference to Memory Address Bus:

[i]"This multiplexed bus supplies the address to the SGRAM/
    SDRAMs providing MD[63:0].
The exact connections of the MA, MBA, and MCS lines to the SGRAM/SDRAM inputs
depends on the memory configuration. See Chapter 5

Is it time for [b]BGA rework??? 8)

ps. Why picture is showed as link and not as picture? In the editor message picture is showed but once posted it is showed as address... ?(

    Regards,
    Oscar.

  • This does sometimes happen for weird (=complex) URLs that make the parser choke, it has happened before. To work around the issue you may want to generate a [Tiny URL] for it.

Besides, I can't load your link anyway. Dropbox says:

  • Thanks @GAT for the info. : )

I started again to work on 3400 A3 and reemplaced MASTER VSA100 CHIP.

Very nice feeling when later a BGA REWORK you see again the card is booting up without problems - each BGA rework is a risk - since I dont have here stuff for checking if process is correct and if there are not balls in short or some ball is not soldered correctly - I would need a X-Ray machine - and when I run a Quake 3 in fast mode or 2xFSAA and lines vanish- not words here. Amazing feeling of 'peace'. 8)

    Another 3Dfx V5-6000 fixed. :respekt:

  • @ osckhar
Nice work, indeed. Did you reuse the old VSA? If so, how did you reball the chip?
Or just clearing the missfit and placing on pcb again?
Which temperature is necessary for that process? 185-190°C or 220°C-230°C?
Couldn't an internal chip defect result by that temperatures or is it just a short heatup within seconds?
Just technical interestet questions ;) - i've never soldered BGA yet and don't plan to do in future.
If you don't want to spread those informations on iNet please use PM function.

    Kind regards

  • Hello at all,

    Tweakstone, thanks!!!
@stivy, no problem. We can talk about tech details here. There are 2 important points, the theory and practice. Theory says a perfect BGA reworks has a curve with a maximum point of heat of arround 220ºC when we are talking about leaded balls but since I dont like stress the PCB with high temperature and I use a profile where max temperature reach not more than 200ºC enough for soldering and desoldering any BGA IC. Later is very important you know very well your BGA MACHINE rework- it means a lot of hours of practice and checking different values for using the best profile you needs.

Yes, high temperatura while you are doing a reflow at a BGA chip can damage it since it can joint different pads. So be ware with reflows since it needs more heat.

Edited 26/03/2027 - I forgot to say I used new and original VSA100 since is not a worth to reball the original chip because the shorts can damage the chips and for reworks I prefer to use new ones. Anyway I have reballed used VSA100 and Avenger or even Rampage chip for my prototypes with not problem. Yes, renalling is an option too.

Kaitou, Here I am for fixing your V5 but not always I will be to able to fix them. ; )

    Regards,
    Oscar.
