EVGA Geforce 8800 Ultra SC + XFX 9800 GX2 XXX CUDA & OC Test Bed.

  • Hi All :)

My mate Niels and I have done something different today :) Remember when we had a HD 2900 XXT testbed? well we used the same setup to build a CUDA & OC test bed with the following parts:

    AMD Athlon64 X2 2x 512KB L2 [2800Mhz] @ 6000+ [3100Mhz]
MSI K9A Platinum AMD 580X Chipset
    2x 1GB Mushkin DDR2 - 800 CL5
    XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 XXX Edition PCI-E 2.0 x16 1024MB GDDR3
    eVGA e-Geforce 8800 Ultra Super Clocked Edition PCI-E 1.1 x16 768MB GDDR3
    1x Maxtor 120GB SATAI 150 HDD
    1x 550 Watt PSU
1x Zalman Fan Controller / wattage monitor

    WinXP Pro 32 + SP3
    Thge Latest Foreware Cuda drivers
    DX9.0c

So here are the pics of our event.

And here the cards neatly installed :)

Tomorrow we will OC this odd setup even that our CPU may be the bottleneck, our goal is to see how much we can get out of this system with these parts, a Thermalright Ultra 120 Limited Edition is planned so we can get more out of the CPU, as which better cooling could result higher clocks, if that doesn't work we are plaining to use an Opteron 12.xx serie's CPU, since these have unlocked multipliers and they seem to OC better than A64X2 BE's so for that part I will keep this topic up to date.

    For CUDA we use Folding@Home.

IF you guys have any other tips or programs we could test CUDA with, please do reply.
As for the games that support Physx we are gonna use UT 2007, Crysis Warhead and 3D mark Vantage, but these titles we are going to use Windows Vista Business 64 + SP1.

And here's something funnyl i did with the 8800 U, I used it as a ramp for my Opel Omega xD:topmodel:

  • What you could try is the Badaboom Media Converter, this piece of software can take almost any Video Input (DVD VOB, DivX, H.264 in any resolution) and transcode it to a 1080p (or smaller) H.264 output stream, muxed to an mp4 Container with AAC audio.

You can get a trial version [here]! The trial is limited to 30 transcodes or 30 days, whichever runs out first. Should be enough for some test runs though. Works on XP x86_32, XP x86_64 as well as Vista x86_32 & x86_64.

Another Video Transcoding Application supporting CUDA would be TMPGEnc XPress 4.0..

You may also find several more CUDA applications directly at nVidias [CUDA Zone]. There are even ready to use Raytracers available, which are greatly parallelizing raycasting algorthims on the shader clusters, enabling far faster raytracing especially for complex scenes with lots of rays and reflections (casting more rays).

Note, that each GX2 will behave like a single GPU to CUDA, since it's running in SLI. Meaning, each GX2 will behave like one GPU with 256 shader units and 1GB of memory. So, in the end, what you will get is three CUDA processors, not one (since they're not running in SLI altogether). Applications will have to be able to use three CUDA processes at the same time to utilize all GPUs. Some applications like SETI@Home/BOINC can do that. I don't know however, how Badaboom, TMPGEnc and others will handle that configuration.

@Ramp: You could do competitions with people, like "who manages to jump the farthest with his matchbox car off the hard-working ULTRA"! ;)

  • I also wanted to upgrade to an Ultra once, but then, GT200 came to life. ;)

  • the 8800 Ultra isn;t that loud at all really alot less more noise than that 9800 GX2 at full load, the weight of the 8800 Ultra is very light as well, since it has an Aluminum cooler and not a copper one hehe

  • I recently tried to encode using SSE optimized x264 with 8 threads on my Core i7 @ 3.6GHz (ffdshow). Took 35 minutes to encode a DVD to a 2CD x264 with AC3 sound. Sound was left unprocessed, but a bicubic resize filter was applied. Should test Badaboom on the same input data, but unfortunately, I can't apply the same resize filter there.

  • hehe kein problemo's comeraden!

I have been waiting along time for Operation Sahnghai and yes the time has truely come

One thing, CPU Bottlenecks :topmodel: heh what are they ?

Oh ja der main graffikkarte ist einer XFX HD 4870 X2 , aber die GeForce 9800 GX2 und 8800 Ultra muss ich gebrauchen fur diesere experiment mit der Shanghai setup ;) si si Seniores! :spitze:

Oh the motherboard looks like this, just to give you a better idea on how she looks like :hre::hre:

Just ordered it today with the ram ;) once the itmes have arrived, many high res pics will be taken

  • Haha, so you have finally begun the task of building this insane rig. Very nice. When this is finally up and running I demand to ramp it up against my i7 to see what your beast can do with 8 physical cores. 8)

  • well some flight simmers that have aDual 2384 they have outperformed an i7 Xtreme 975 @ 4.2Ghz with Flight Sim X stand alone this is because FSX loves the Opteron's Hyper Transport links and it's 64 Bit technology, well I'm like seeing is believing but on the other hand FSX prefers real cores that HT, so Think it's CPU power will be fenominal just on that behalf but okay Hyper Pi is a good too to really put our mega systems to a neat stress test right :)
it's made for Fligfht Simulator X mainly so you system could be faster in some games since most games support 2 cores and no more but on the other hand if SMP is supported in some games we could have a tie but if the programs are very CPU intensive such as FSX this would crush any desktop out there hehe, I really did alot of research before beginning on this project, but sure I will gladly join the race mate :)
