  • By reading your thread, i remembered, that i have an ASUS P4T, too  The first P4 was so slow :mauer:

When i have time, i think, i will build an simular system as yours. The Indigo Orb is so nice, unfortunately i can't find CPU Cooler for the 423 sockel, which looks great as the Indigo Orb. Have you any idea, mabey a full copper Cooler?

I would be that person who has two new old stock TT Indigo Orb's. I was already trying to sell them as I have no socket 423 system myself.
If you want to buy one from me send me a PM. I'm asking 10€ a piece. Shipping from NL :)

OT: Also this is my first post on this forum haha

Anytime, helping friends is something I always enjoy doing :)
The Indigo Orb is a good cooler also I Pmed' ya, asi I found you a nice P4 S423 2Ghz hehe :spitze:

All I Seek now is a SATA II PCI 32 Bit RAID Card that Supports RAID 5, with that I want to use 4x 300GB WD Velociraptors in RAID 5.
Unless this won't work? Any suggestions?

  • Hmm nice find, but SadTropher from 2CPU.com linked me some better options, Silicon Image made SATA II Raid cards for PCI-X that is reverse compliant with PCI 2.1 32 Bit :)
But they also made PCI 2.1 32 Bit cards as well, so I am gonna let that settle for a bit.

The Ram is confusing me atm, as it arrived today, here it is:

4x 512MB PC-800-40ns ECC Rambus RDRAM from Samsung Original:

    Top side:
    http://abload.de/img/4x512mbpc-800-40nseccfhj6d.jpg

    Rear side:
    http://abload.de/img/4x512mbpc-800-40nseccn9jhz.jpg

Here the ram neatly installed :)
    http://abload.de/img/systemsideshot1ejui.jpg

Close up of the motherboard and all the parts:
    http://abload.de/img/ti-4600closeupj3jvg.jpg

Closeup of the Ram, CPU & GPU:
    http://abload.de/img/cpuramgpucloseupodkuj.jpg

Closeup of the Ram & CPU
    http://abload.de/img/newlyinstalledrambusmsljqz.jpg

Everything works lots faster now, thanks to this ram upgrade, it puts the P4 @Ghz and the Ti-4600 to their proper rights.

But when I went in to the Bios, it only shows 1920MB instead of 2048MB
But CPU-ID does detect 2GB and 4x 512MB, so that did prove me that the ram I bought does work fine.

It could be some sort of limit or something with the ASUS P4Tand/or the Intel i850 Chipset.

Here the bios showing 1920MB system ram instead instead of 2048MB, which is 128MB less.
    http://abload.de/img/1920mbinstalledinsteatgkgw.jpg

What I may need is a Bios update the Bios I am using now is 1.006 Beta 004 as you can see here in the post:
    http://abload.de/img/bios1.006beta004sajxu.jpg
That might take care of this max installed system ram issue.

But then again Bios 1.007 & 1.008.001 Beta don't offer the updates I seek, if a Bios works I mostly leave it alone.
    https://www.asus.com/supportonly/P4T/HelpDesk_download

But if that ain't it, then I wonder what it does with the remaining 128MB ram, heh.

Here WinXP showing 1.87GB Ram, as where CPU-ID Shows 2GB:
    http://abload.de/img/ramamountdifferencesgbk88.jpg

Here CPU-ID's detailed CPU Mobo & Ram Info:
    http://abload.de/img/cpumoboraminfopfj45.jpg

As parts go on what I am still seeking is a SATA II Raid 5 Controller for max 4 drives, but it needs to be PCI 2.1 32 Bit.
So I don't know if that exists, need to do some research on that, if I find anything I will keep you guys informed :)

  • After some reboots the ram is now 1984MB over 1920MB, still 64MB away from 2048MB..

    Here the Bootup:
    [Blockierte Grafik: http://abload.de/img/moreramonbootupyxsof.jpg]

    Here the Bios:
    [Blockierte Grafik: http://abload.de/img/1984mbinsteadof1920mb8tsxs.jpg]

Here from Windows showing 1.93GB instead of 1.87GB but still not 2.00GB.
    [Blockierte Grafik: http://abload.de/img/1.93gbramktsca.jpg]

It seems I can't seem to find our which this changes and I can't find anything that could fix this as well.

After running Everest Ultimate 5.5 x86, it detected that 1 of the 8 halves is 192MB while the other 7 are 256MB:
    [Blockierte Grafik: http://abload.de/img/everestdetects1x192mb8ej06.jpg]

It may seem how this system works, I could refit the ram as well, but I dunno, CPU-ID does detect 4x 512MB.
So might be the AGP Aperture size of 64MB, there by sparing 64MB for the VGA card.

    Well I refitted the ram, and no change still 1984MB in Bios, AGP Aperture size is 64MB, so I think that is why;
1984MB + 64MB = 2048MB which the system is using, more Ican't really thing of, performance is dead stable as well.

  • Well I won't be flashing a new bios on the P4T rofl xD

Major thanks go to leevmeister for helping me out of that hell ride :steinigung:
Bios 1.007 made the system hang at bootup before the ram test, after I was able to get in the bios after a random amount of resets, the Bios read 64MB Ram 8|:cursing::gadget:

So I cleared CMOS didn't help, then I placed in the old ram and that booted just fine, 128MB Non-ECC + 256MB ECC & 128MB Non-ECC + 256MB ECC PC-800-45 16Bit and then the system booted normally.. which I didn't get , but still :gadget:
With that setup I was able to flash back and now 4x 512MB-40ns 18Bit works fine again with Bios 1.006 Beta 004.

No more flashing for my ASUS P4T haha, I panicked hard lol :topmodel:

Anyways my Ram is also 18Bit per 512MB so this could be why my Ram counts to 1984MB instead of 2048MB if using 16Bit ram sticks. The system is rock solid once again.

  • No, there are only 16 data paths, so 16-bit per module, 32-bit for both channels. The two extra bits are for addressing your ECC chips!

The missing RAM is likely due to a conflict with some PCI address space(s), maybe because of some onboard chips that reserve memory in the lower regions, could also be an extension cards' doing. Many 32-bit x86 machines suffer from this. It's not really a big problem though.

Well there are PC-800-45 chips that have a SPD of 16 Bit and the ones I have are PC-800-40ns with SPD of 18Bit and these both have ECC, it's kind of confusing I guess.
So I thought what that difference may cause my issue, maybe I need to seek 4x 512MB PC-800-45ns with SPD of 16Bit.

Even I could be wrong, the 2extra Bit for ECC that would make sense, but then why are there PC-800-45ns Rimms with SPD of 16 Bit & 18Bit rofl

Also strange that a newer stable bios 1.007 in this place caused major instabilities with my 4x 512MBPC-800-40ns SPD 18 and when I reused my 2x 128MB PC-800-40ns SDP 16 Non ECC + 2x 256MB PC-800-45ns SDP 16 ECC all worked fine.
So I used that ram to flash back and all was good again. the ASUS P4T is one strange mystery lol :topmodel:

  • At most, it can be an error in the specs. Just like with PS/2 and SDRAM, where there are 64-bit DIMMs/SIMMs and 72-bit Parity/ECC DIMMs/SIMMs, the case is similar for RDRAM. So, all regular RDRAM is either 16- or 32-bit, whereas all ECC RDRAM is either 18- or 36-bit. Anything else is a mistake in the specs. You always need some extra lanes for ECC and that's that. The detection issues are likely due to address space overlaps, as said. No Space Magic there. Just simple stuff. ;)

hah okay well for me it is complicated since I never seen a single system I had show such oddities as with my ABiT VP6 system it too has 4x 512MB ECC but using PC_133 ECC Reg HP Micron memory instead, still the same kind of thing.
Max Ram for VP6 is 2GB PC-133 ECC Reg, so kind of stand that system from one year ago didn't run in to the same issue my P4 of one year later did run in to as max system memory goes :)

I guess i850 works a lot different than VIA Apollo Pro 133A, that too may bring differences.

  • Well, I had my own fair share of issues with running 2GB on i850E. On my mainboard (Intel D850EMV2) I needed a special Beta BIOS for it to even work at all, if I remember correctly..

Aha that explains it then, i850E is the refresh of i850, i850E has Socket 478 as where i850 has Socket 423, kinda funny they both have the same issue..
As I too needed a Beta bios to see my 2GB ram as well, Bios 1007 did see my old ram 768MB but not my 2GB Ram setup which it only detects 1.93 GB aka 1984 MB, Bios 1006 Beta 004 is what I use now and all is dead stable, i850 like i850E are two very strange chipsets...

Makes me wonder if i860 also had the same issues as i850/i850E did, as that the Supermicro P4DC6+ also only supports 4x 512MB PC-600 & PC-800 ECC Reg:

  • Well I bought a gem for this old P4 today and a very rare item as well 8)

    ASUS V9999 GT AGP 256MB GDDR3 Rev. 1.01
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1422990720…K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
    http://abload.de/img/asusv9999gtagp256mbgdknuco.jpg

This is the one of the best GeForce 6800 GT AGP 256MB's ever made and also one of the rarest to find, it took me 7+ years to find one 8|:D
With this NV40 I want to see how well this system performs in games that have well optimized SSE2 support :topmodel:

So by adding this NV40 in there that also allows it to run games that also support Shader Model 3.0 with OpenGL 2.0 & DirectX 9.0c API's.
This GPU will allow me to try out and test Primal Carnage Extinction running on the system @ 640x 480 x32, I really want to see if I even get a few fps, just for the fun of it :spitze:
Games like Doom3, Half Life2 & Far Cry will also be tested.

Stay tuned for lots more to come! 8)

  • OK, that was new to me.

Nah that's fine, it's that most old motherboards I used before 2004 don't work well with non-native AGP cards, the PCI-E to AGP bridge chip tends to cause numerous instability issues.
Also the XFX 6800 XT AGP isn't rare at all, the ASUS V9999GT Rev 1.01 is extremely rare to find it uses the same PCB, Dual Molex power inputs and ram chips as it's even rarer brother the V9999 Ultra Extreme AGP 256MB Rev 1.01.
The only difference of the V9999 Ultra Xtreme AGP 256MB vs the V9999GT AGP 256MB is that the Ultra Extreme has a green PCB and this GT has a blue one for the rest they are identical, same ram etc, these can run speeds at Ultra speeds without issues some even run at Ultra Extreme speeds.

It's that I really really wanted this card, but I never knew I would ever find one this cheap, last week I was too late even one sold for 176 USD ex shipping, so hey 60USD incl shipping is a steal for this exact card :D

Since 1994 I have been collecting VGA cards, I had well over 800 cards since that time, trust me I know what is rare and what really isn't, here a topic I made at EVGA to give you some memories of all the cards I had and still have :)
