Voodoo5 4ns memory mod

    I proudly present my new baby :)
    It's a voodoo5 with 4ns memories, swapped from a GF2 asus v7100 pro.

    Many thanks to Komponent for this amazing mod !

    The original cooling is very weak.
    With it max overclocking was 192Mhz. Target was at least 200Mhz :)

    The next step was to change the coolers with other ones, bigger.

    The results were unfortunately the same...max 192Mhz.

    Next step: removing the heatsink !
    Card was cooled down in the fridge and heatsink were carefully removed. A lot of emotion in this moment :D

    Also with 2x80mm fans no better results were achieved >:(
    Max Overclocking was 193Mhz.

    The voltage was set from 2.8V to 3.2V - no change !!!

    The card gets very hot, so that a proper cooling is very important !

    The next planned step is to use 2 cooper coolers with arctic silver 5 paste :)
    For the rear of the card, I want also to attach a heatsink. Any recommendation for the front and back coolers ?
    How far can I go with the voltage rising ? Up to 3.3 V ?

    Ich habe heute weiter gemacht :)

    It seems that I choose not the best overclockable voodoo.

    Modding is finish !

    I manage to mount the cooper coolers.
    With this cooper coolers the card could be pushed to 195Mhz. Even if the voltage was rised up to 3.3V, 196Mhz were not possible.

    Now was time to improve the cooling on the back of the card.
    The area behind the VSA get very hot.
    On the back of the card I mount those tiny heatshink.

    And, yes ! I reach 200Mhz stable !

    Voltage must be 3.26V to run stable.

    199Mhz are stable with 3.17V.
    201Mhz was no stable even if I rise the voltage to 3.3V.

    P.S.: unbelievable cooling solution by 3dfx beneath the passive coolers. This paste looks like it will act as a thermoisolation!

    Well, i remember how hot my voodoo 3-2000 has been after hours of playing.
    And it runs with out a fan on the cooler.

    One evening after playing NFS-Porsche, i take out the card from my pc and showed it to my mom.
    "Mom, just put your hand over here, you could make eggs on the card".

    That was crazy.

    Anyway, i guess 3dfx has planed the cooling of the cards.
    It means, this solution is allright for the temperature and thats all. They knowed the limits of the chips
    (the thermal maximum)

    Ich denke, man muss einfach Glück haben, und zwei richtig gute VSA100 erwischen.
    Aber 200MHz sind nicht von schlechten Eltern! :respekt:


    Schade nur, dass 3dfx-Karten im Allgemeinen mit höherem Takt kaum skalieren.

    20% höherer OC = 7% mehr Punkte im 3D-Mark
    Ist schon ein bisschen unfair von der Voodoo.

    Aber der Umbau ansich ist cool! :spitze:

    Der Tausch des RAMs hat es also voll gebracht. :gadget: Der Mod ist zwar schön sauber, aber an und für sich eben sinnlos. dafür sehen die Kühler recht schick aus. :spitze:

    Ehrlich gesagt habe ich viel mehr Leistung erwartet.
    Der Speicher hat Komponent getauscht :)
    Die Asus karte hat mir Rolo geschickt, schon ein paar Jahre her.....
    Dieses Speicher mod ist meine zweite...der erste ist in die Hose gegangen.

    Wenn mann so etwas nachmachen will, rate ich erstmal der Sannungsregeln zu loeten.
    Damit kann man schon der maximales takt pruefen, ohne die Speicher zu tauschen.

    Es gibt karten die 200Mhz schaffen, ohne bessere kuhlung, voltmod oder andere speicher.

    Ich habe vor ein paar Jahre so eine voodoo5 gehabt, und der habe ich auf 200Mhz ubertaktet im winter.
    Der sistem wurde draussen ( beim -20grad ) auf dem Fenster ubertaktet :)

    Which BIOS are you using? Try 1.18 and 1.16 one of them had more relaxed RAM timings.
    And one thing, try to lap your VSA100. The are not really flat and
    deeper in the middle, which lets your card get hot in the center of the Chip on the back, because
    your coolers don´t contact very well! More Thermal Grease is no solution :thumbdown:

    Basically this "experiment" rules out the long known theory of RAM limiting the VSA100 O/C capabilities. So VSA100 seems to be of comparably bad O/C capabilities. A Chip designed to run @183MHz that together with voltage boost, RAM Mod and high end cooling finally just achieves a 10% O/C would be called crappy by most O/Cers. Your mods exceed by far what is normally necessary to get a 20% (10%) overclock!

    As you mention there are (selected) cards which manage 200MHz w/o mods just proofing a big variability in GPU quality...Even Avenger (V3) managed to clock above 200MHz...

    If you wanna go on with this poject i would try to get one of those unmodded 200MHz cards (or 195MHz) and mod them again with your RAM.

    yes, it"s odd that the avenger manage to go 220Mhz, and the VSA less.
    Accoring to the VSA Sheet, the chip are designet to work up to 200Mhz.

    Maybe a leap will help, must check what I can do :) Thanks for the hint.
    I used AS5, but not much, according to the instruction.


    Now Is to late to mod another card, as I do not have another GF4 card as donner and no other v5 more :(
    I am searching for such a v5, witch run @200 without this mod - with stock cooling an stock voltage.
    For sure I will mod a card like this - if I am lucky to get one :)

    This cards are very very rare afaik.
    Have somebody one to sell ?

    AAlchemySX System mit Tyan Serverboard und 2 PIIIs

    Ich werde eine sehr ubertaktbares v5 suchen und eine neue karte modden ;)
    Der v5 soll schon mit 198mhz stabil laufen mit der stock kuhlung.
    Wenn jemand so eine v5 hat bzw. Eine v7100pro zu verkaufen hat, soll sich bitte bei mir melden !

    Das kann ich nicht unterschreiben/nachvollziehen. VSA-100-basierte Modelle skalieren eigentlich besonders gut mit dem Takt – man muss nur zeitgenössische Anwendungen testen, bei denen die 3dfx-Karten nicht mehrfach "bottlenecked" werden. :topmodel: Im 3DMark2001 bremst nicht nur das Tri-Setup der V5 (das skaliert mit dem Takt), sondern vor allem die AGP-Anbindung. Unreal Tournament, NFS Porsche oder auch Quake 3 Arena skalieren super mit dem Kerntakt, da diese Limits hier nicht durchschlagen.

    Well, Avenger is "outdated crap" compared to the VSA-100. The latter one has much more transistors and features to handle. The NV10 (GeForce 256) couldn't clock as high as the NV5 (Ultra) either. :adsh:
